Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was born in in 1836, in Dronrijp, the Netherlands. His father died when Laurens was four, leaving behind five children. His mother thought the children should study drawing and incorporated it into the children’s schooling. At the age of fifteen, he was diagnosed with consumption, and given only a short time to live. His mother allowed him to spend his remaining days at his leisure. Alma-Tadema unexpectedly regained his health and decided to enroll in the Royal Academy of Antwerp where he studied early Dutch and Flemish art.
Alma-Tadema’s first painting, The Education of the Children of Clovis was critically acclaimed and led to the foundation of his reputation and fame. After the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, Alma-Tadema moved to London, where he would spend the rest of his life. With his continued success, he became one of the most famous and highly paid artists of his time.
Alma-Tadema art book contains 50 Reproductions of the architecture, life, clothing and events of Ancient Greece and Rome.
