Winfield Scott Schley (1839-1911), a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, served in the U. S. Navy during the Civil War, led the successful Greely rescue expedition in the Arctic, and commanded the Flying Squadron during the Spanish-American War. In command of the USS Brooklyn, he directed U.S. Naval forces and destroyed the squadron of Spanish Admiral Pascual Cervera in the naval battle of Santiago, Cuba on July 3, 1898. He was commissioned a Rear Admiral after the war. This is Schley’s personal memoir of his life.
