Tasman Arch, Tasman Peninsula

photo

Tasman Arch, Tasman Peninsula

The Tasman Arch is like an extreme blowhole formation. Over many thousands of years, the sea has eroded a tunnel into the soft dolomite rock at the bottom of the cliff, and gradually, more and more of the roof collapsed making the cave about 50-100 metres high. Finally, at the end of the tunnel, the roof collapsed entirely, leaving this impressive view down through what is now a natural bridge or archway probably 20 metres across, 50 metres from seaward edge to the edge closest the camera, probably no more than 10 metres thick, and about 100 metres above the sea... (the railings you can see in the right are 1.5 metres high) It makes you think twice when you walk across it... :-o I certainly wouldn't have wanted to be one of the council grew using jack-hammers to put up those railings!!!
