Bob Mackey has been to the Nike Tournament of Champions long enough to know how unkind the draw can be sometimes. The Royals drew the host school St. Mary’s (Ariz.) to start.
“The deck was stacked very much against us,” the Christ the King coach said. “You know when you put your name in the hat you know what could come out. ... They were hot from the start.”
St. Mary’s shot 68 percent from the field in the first half and CK was never able to recover in an eventual 66-37 loss in the opening round of the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix. Harvard-bound guard Shilpa Tummala scored 28 of her 30 points on six 3-pointers in the first half for the Knights, ranked No. 20 in the country by USA Today.
“We ran into a chain saw tonight,” Mackey said. “Wow, definitely the term. They were knocking down 3s left, right and center.”
Sierra Calhoun led Christ the King (0-3) with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and Kollyns Scarbrough added seven. The Royals trailed 47-26 at the half. They face nationally ranked Wesleyan (Ga.) in the consolation round Tuesday morning, 10:30 a.m. PST. Mackey called this as good a level of competition the tournament has had in more than five years.
“It’s a three-game tournament [now], I told the kids,” he said. “The goal right now is to finish 3-3 [overall] that’s our goal.”
