Valencia was founded on the banks of the Turia River in 137 BC. Although of vast importance to the region and the city as the navigable link between the sea, the city and agricultural regions inland, the river produced devastating floods, destroying large parts of Valencia time and again. After the floods of 1957, the river was rerouted around the city, leaving behind an empty riverbed. Beginning in the 1980s, the riverbed was converted to gardens, museums, playgrounds and much more. It is a beautiful environment in the middle of Valencia.
