Pakistan Says U.S. Pauses Airstrikes

ISLAMABAD–The CIA has stopped firing missiles at militants in Pakistan since last month's North Atlantic Treaty Organization deadly air strikes along the Afghan border so as not to "aggravate" already strained ties with Islamabad, the chief of Pakistan's senate defense committee said Tuesday.

The 33-day pause is the longest since the program began in 2004, according to the Long War Journal, a website that tracks the strikes.

Relations between Pakistan and the United States are at their lowest ebb in years following the Nov. 26 air strikes at the Pakistani army border outpost that killed 24 soldiers. The Pakistani army responded by closing its border with Afghanistan to trucks carrying U.S. and NATO war supplies. It is demanding a complete review of its relationship with Washington.

Javed Ashraf Qazi, the defense committee chief, said he believed the pause in attacks was because the U.S. "does not want to aggravate the situation any further."

Still, Mr. Qazai, a former army general who gets high-level briefings because of his position on the committee, said he believed that if the United States had a "high-level" target in its sights then, "I think they would go ahead" and launch a strike . "If they do so, the results could get worse," he said.

Pakistan's government and army have long publicly protested the U.S. drone program, but in private have given their consent. The attacks are very unpopular among ordinary Pakistanis, who generally regard them as an unacceptable breach of sovereignty.

American officials do not comment on the drone program in public.

The Long War Journal quoted an anonymous American official as saying the pause was because another attack "push U.S.-Pakistan relations past the point of no return."

The CIA drone program began in 2004 to target al Qaeda and Taliban militants in Pakistan's tribal regions along the Afghan border, but the frequency of the attacks began increasing in 2008. There have been around 60 this year, significantly less than in 2010. American officials say privately that the drones are a key weapon in reducing the threat from militants in the border area.

There have been at least two other pauses in the drone program that have coincided with tense tie between Islamabad and Pakistan, including earlier this year when Pakistan was detaining CIA contractor Raymond Davis after he killed two people in the eastern city of Lahore.

Girls basketball roundup: Hot-shooting St. Mary's handles CK at TOC

Bob Mackey has been to the Nike Tournament of Champions long enough to know how unkind the draw can be sometimes. The Royals drew the host school St. Mary’s (Ariz.) to start.

“The deck was stacked very much against us,” the Christ the King coach said. “You know when you put your name in the hat you know what could come out. ... They were hot from the start.”

St. Mary’s shot 68 percent from the field in the first half and CK was never able to recover in an eventual 66-37 loss in the opening round of the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix. Harvard-bound guard Shilpa Tummala scored 28 of her 30 points on six 3-pointers in the first half for the Knights, ranked No. 20 in the country by USA Today.

“We ran into a chain saw tonight,” Mackey said. “Wow, definitely the term. They were knocking down 3s left, right and center.”

Sierra Calhoun led Christ the King (0-3) with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and Kollyns Scarbrough added seven. The Royals trailed 47-26 at the half. They face nationally ranked Wesleyan (Ga.) in the consolation round Tuesday morning, 10:30 a.m. PST. Mackey called this as good a level of competition the tournament has had in more than five years.

“It’s a three-game tournament [now], I told the kids,” he said. “The goal right now is to finish 3-3 [overall] that’s our goal.”

bidos alleyway

photo

bidos alleyway

Alleyway in bidos, Portugal.

bidos is a town (vila) of about 3100 inhabitants in central Portugal. The name of the town derives from the Latin word oppidum for fortified town. There was a settlement with the name Eburobrittium at this site already during the time of the Roman Empire. After the decline of the Roman empire the area was under control of the Visigoths until it was conquered by the Moors. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, recaptured it during the Reconquista in 1148. His grandson, King Afonso II, made the town a wedding present for his wife Urraca. Several other kings continued this custom, so that's why bidos is also called Vila das Rainhas (town of the queens).
bidos is a well-preserved example of medieval architecture and a popular tourist destination. Even today it is still surrounded by its old walls and the fortifications of the old castle.

Work and Pleasure

The little boat seems to be generally used for crab fishing but is nearly always at this spot and photographed a lot. The expensive pleasure boats rarely move either. The largest ones seem to be somewhere warmer at present.

Three Raw files tone-mapped in Photomatix and tweaked in Gimp. Taken with Tamron wide angle lens.

Blue/Green Waters

Lake Wakatipu, on the way to Glenorchy. Central Otago, New Zealand, day 6 Oct 26, 2011 on our trip down south.

'Using my Pentax' I used both camera's to see what differents there may be!

Queenstown is a resort town in Otago in the south-west of New Zealand's South Island. It is built around an inlet called Queenstown Bay on Lake Wakatipu, a long thin Z-shaped lake formed by glacial processes, and has spectacular views of nearby mountains.

William Gilbert Rees, along with fellow explorer Nicholas Von Tunzelman, were the first Europeans to settle the area. Rees was in search of pastoral land, and after an initial visit returned in 1860 to establish a high country farm in the location of Queenstown's current town centre. However the Rees’ farming lifestyle was to be short-lived. In 1862 gold was discovered in the Arrow River, a short distance from Queenstown at which point Rees converted his wool shed into a hotel named the Queen's Arms, now known as Eichardt's.

There are various apocryphal accounts of how the town was named, the most popular suggesting that a local gold digger exclaimed that the town was "fit for Queen Victoria". It is now known for its commerce-oriented tourism, especially adventure and ski tourism.

A hard life for one Latina teenager

Miriam Hernandez

Miriam Hernandez works long hours to pay the bills at her family's trailer. Her mother has a bad back and knee. (Don Bartletti / Los Angeles Times)

Reporting from Athens, Ga.—

When she is at home, Miriam Hernandez eats fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. And corn bread. And corn tortillas.

She has a little sister, Ana Maria, whom everybody calls Guera -- Spanish for blondie. She has a little brother, Jesus. Everybody calls him Bubba.

She sings along to Sinaloan bandas when she is busing tables at her uncle's Mexican restaurant out by the shuttered chicken plant. She sings along to country hit-maker Luke Bryant when she's driving in the family van with her white Southern mother.

She is 16 years old, and a native-born Georgian. She has a learner's permit and would like to take the driving class that would allow her to get a license -- that elusive prize so many of her foreign-born friends will never have.

The class costs $230, but the money from her two jobs is spoken for. Since her stepfather, an illegal immigrant named Abigail Carrillos, returned to El Salvador to avoid a forced deportation, she has stepped up as the family's main breadwinner.

In October, unpaid bills nearly prompted the utility to shut off power to the family home, a single-wide trailer with a leaking roof, gashes in the rain-softened drywall, and a framed photo of Abigail staring down at his family from the vantage of some happier past.

Which is why Miriam drives through Athens tentatively -- overcompensating, at times, with a litany of sass.

"Trust me, I'm not gonna hit your ugly car."

Donna has been pushing Miriam to acquire the means to vault beyond such troubles for good. She is a sophomore, but is taking enough classes to graduate a year early.

On Friday morning, the kids were dressing and primping for school, Miriam in an '80s-style off-the-shoulder T-shirt, with big hoop earrings and stylish rectangular glasses.

"Me traes Q-Tips, please?" she yelled to Guera. Her sister handed them over.

One of Miriam's homies stopped in and drove her and Guera to class. She has two kinds of friends at school, she says. The Latino kids, her homies. And what she calls her "academic friends" -- the white kids in her college prep classes, though she rarely hangs out with them after school. She doesn't hang out with the black kids.

She and Ana may be half white, but in the self-segregating culture of high school they are lumped with the Latinos. So that is what they consider themselves, and proudly so. When they visit their step-grandmother in Alabama, they bristle when she tells them to stop with all the Spanish.

In the short term, Miriam wants her brother to gain a little self-confidence, maybe through sports. She wants Guera, who has a wild streak, to keep out of trouble. Guera, 15, is already in ROTC, which Miriam considers a positive step. "They teach you how to be a good citizen," she says. "That's one of our goals."

She wants Abigail to come home and for her mother to be happy again.

She wants to make enough money to pay for more than utilities. Her mother's intermittent contributions to the family income come from informal work as a fixer of sorts, the gringa you call when you are being picked up by police or become otherwise entangled with government. She works for tips or, if tips aren't forthcoming, for free.

On Friday evening, Donna raced off when a man named Manuel called to say he'd had a fender-bender with a BMW. With her mother away in the van, Miriam had no way to get to her housekeeping job.

The next morning, she was hustling around her uncle's restaurant, serving pozole and sopa de mariscos to patrons longing for a taste of home and to adventurous college kids lured, perhaps, by the five-star reviews on Yelp. ("Don't worry about the skuzzy location: just go here."). A black woman wandered in. She had grown fond of the tripe.

Miriam's uncle said the job was the best gift he could give her. He could just give her the cash, but what would that teach her about the way the world works?
